Communication design is traditionally understood through the frame of juxtaposing text and image. Designers possess the ability to produce text and process language through writing to expand how that connection emerges in their work. While often stewards of meaning, designers still provide authorship through visual expression. Communicating ideas through active engagement with writing enhances one’s practice and this course will explore writing with an emphasis on play and self-discovery. Writing as a designer manifests conceptual thinking, develops criticality, and facilitates the relationship between content and audience. Through their work, designers tell stories, build arguments, and express their own subjectivity on the world and the issues we face. During this section we will work to demystify the writing process and lay the foundation to utilize and gain confidence in writing as a design tool in a sandbox environment. Writing for Designers asks students to read between the lines in communication de-sign, articulating not only how design appears in the world, but how it speaks.
